Throughout their long history, CARPATHIAN FOREST have covered a wide range of sonic territory. This Double LP collects the earliest demo material that the band released, and it is easily among their best output. Despite the fact that they were... (See More) all released nearly contemporaneously, the two demo recordings and a studio rehearsal on this compilation – Bloodlust and Perversion (1992), Rehearsal (1992), and Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svartjern (1993) – cover a vast spectrum within the Black Metal genre. The tracks on the Bloodlust and Perversion demo are predominantly mid-paced and, at times, even doomy, evoking a sound more akin to SAMAEL, HELLHAMMER or even GOATLORD. The atmosphere that CARPATHIAN FOREST attains with this sound is distinct from those or any other band's output, however. While more sludgy and visceral than much of the Norwegian Black Metal of that era, CARPATHIAN FOREST still manage to create the sense of isolation and solitude characteristic of the Norwegian landscape that is so often associated with that region's output in the early 1990s. The Journey Through the Cold Black Moors of Svartjern material is even more atmospheric in that it eschews most of the traditional elements of metal in favor of a pure descent into the sensory realms. The first track is a keyboard-laden, militant dirge that, but for the vocals, could nearly be characterized as dark industrial or neofolk. The two tracks that follow are even more folkloric. This sound, while uncharacteristic of most of CARPATHIAN FOREST's work before or since, is arguably some of their darkest and most melancholic work. This demo recording reveals that much of what is relevant and intriguing about Black Metal is the atmosphere of the music rather than the aggression that is often associated with it. The last tracks on this compilation, however, show that CARPATHIAN FOREST were equally adept at channeling the aforementioned aggression inherent in Black Metal. These tracks, taken from the obscure rehearsal recording from 1992, are predominantly primitive Black Metal as one would expect. More furious and raw than the other two demos, these tracks are a step closer to the sound evolving in Norway during the rise of the second wave of Back Metal. CARPATHIAN FOREST's style on this recording is not quite fully realized, however, and the band seems to rely heavily upon the first wave bands that inspired them. Indeed, this demo features cover tracks by both BATHORY and VENOM as well as stylistic nods to HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST. Overall, these early recordings capture not only a band in the process of defining its own style, but of the emergence of an entire genre of music and the diverse potential inherent within it.

When you think of musically aggressive bands in the NWOBHM, obviously the first band that would spring to mind would be the mighty VENOM, however, amongst the smaller bands fighting for recognition like SHOCK TREATMENT or BLOOD MONEY, there existed... (See More) a band so underground, and with a name only whispered in select circles rarely, it become hard to actually believe that they ever existed.

First mentioned publically in Malc McMillan's The N.W.O.B.H.M. Encyclopaedia, ROBESPIERRE were noted for their occult leanings, and the fact they were allegedly so fucking heavy. Obviously, by that criteria they were a band that everyone was desperate to hear, and fans of already-noted heavyweights such as DESOLATION ANGELS, APOCALYPSE, RACE AGAINST TIME, PAGAN ALTAR or HELL have been constantly on the lookout for any known recordings by ROBESPIERRE, but until now precious few have ever actually been lucky enough to sample their brand of audio violence or actually know ANYTHING at all about the history of the band!

ROBESPIERRE’s debut 1983 demo deserves its place in the all-time unsung NWOBHM heroes hall of fame, alongside Race Against Time and Deep Machine, purely on the basis that it's possibly the heaviest of all NWOBHM demos on the strength of its overall atmosphere. This demo delivers an iron fist to the face of the listener! Listening to songs like "Die You Heathen Die!" and "Backs to the Wall", not only do you get insanely heavy metal, but you get what I can only describe as the perfect mix between early VENOM and the first PAGAN ALTAR cassette album! An almost impossible task in the hands of most, but these recordings have stood the test of time and still deliver the goods with a fury! Amazingly recorded on a four-track cassette machine by just two lunatics, probably in a beer-can-littered gloomy attic, and only originally intended for close friends – ROBESPIERRE captured that elusive "NWOBHM" ethos and spirit that so many others failed to do.

However, not content with finally exhuming this amazing piece of British metal history, BBTAD have, with the aid of ROBESPIERRE's lead guitar maniac David, dragged even more recordings dating from the same year from their shallow grave. Showcasing a slower and more controlled style in places, the songs are no less vicious. In particular "Maelstrom" and "Decapitation" are two bloody-knuckled classics worthy of investigation. There can be no doubt that this album and these recordings need to be heard by a wider audience, and for that, we are forever in the debt of David for emerging from his rotting mausoleum and giving BBTAD this incredible opportunity!

This split release initially caught my attention because of the... (See More) SCYTHIAN side, since their amazing 2009 debut full-length Those Who Stand Against Us was one of that year's finest offerings. And with "Grunwald" here, they continue their quest, by unleashing their marching, crushing death metal with a definite old-school feeling, magnificent guitar leads and battering drums. This is EPIC in its truest meaning. On the other side of the vinyl, Greek blackmetallers KAWIR seem to take a different approach in their sound. Their "Titanomachia" track steps with one foot in the Hellenic black metal scene of the early nineties with the melodies of a more classic metal approach (this is especially made clear in the track's closing minute). With the other foot, they incorporate uncompromising first-era BATHORY riffing and the outcome proves surprisingly solid. Add native tongue vocals and some fine pagan feeling and suddenly 7" splits are essential. Well, not really, but in this case we DO have an exception!"
