Shanhai is the 20th anniversary album of Taiwanese black metal act INFERNO REQUIEM. The album reimagines the epic legends of ancient Taiwanese mythology, written for the first time from the viewpoint of the notorious nemeses who are often depicted as the villains in most official historical documents/records. Shanhai represents a clandestine pagan folklore, illustrating these untold tales with a unique perspective while representing the purest underground sound in black metal.

The simple-yet-profound debut album Gloomy Night Stories provides primitive and aggressive punches in the face. The Moon EP surrounds the listener with a toxic taste within its ghastly, ritual atmospheres. The mechanical, coldly apocalyptic second album Nüwa is infused with a strong Sc-fi approach regarding ancient alien bio-invasion and human evolution. Shanhai acts as a sort of fusion of these approaches, while some majestic momentum is also added to the mix. It unequivocally marks the most monumental period over the band's two-decade span.
